Towards a Circular Water Economy

SIERA NanoAqua supports the transition towards a circular water economy.

By reducing residuals, recovering valuable resources, and enabling water reuse, treatment systems are transformed into sustainable and efficient infrastructure solutions. Wastewater becomes a source of water, energy, and nutrients.

This approach aligns with European sustainability goals and contributes to reducing the carbon footprint of existing and future treatment plants.

Technology Approach

Advanced processes enabling enhanced treatment performance

SIERA NanoAqua combines advanced electro-oxidation, electrokinetic disintegration, and ultrasound to enhance wastewater treatment at the molecular level.

Cavitation effects and nanobubble dynamics help break down contaminants into basic components, enabling the treatment of substances that are difficult to remove with conventional methods.

All technologies are modular and designed for seamless integration into both new and existing treatment plants.

Results & Added Value

SIERA NanoAqua technologies deliver measurable technical and operational benefits:

  • Reduction of sludge volume by up to 50%, with remaining fractions converted into energy
  • Effective removal of PFAS, pharmaceuticals, hormones, pesticides, and microplastics
  • Treated water suitable for reuse, including agricultural irrigation
  • Increased agricultural productivity through nutrient-enriched water
  • Energy generation via biogas, biomethane, and hydrogen
  • Improved biological treatment processes with reduced oxygen demand
  • Lower operating and disposal costs
  • Enhanced compliance with environmental regulations

3. Supercritical Water (SCW) and Plasma Activated Water (PAW)

When water passes through electrokinetic disintegration and ultrasound, cavitation bubbles are generated within the liquid. Their implosion creates extreme physical conditions and intense shear forces at the nanoscale, breaking down contaminants on a molecular level.

With further treatment and air injection, the density of micro- and nanobubbles increases significantly, forming a plasma activated water (PAW) state. This process improves the removal of persistent pollutants, inactivates germs and bacteria, and traps carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrate in the liquid as nanobubbles.

The result is highly treated, oxygen-rich water that can support reuse applications, including irrigation, while improving overall treatment efficiency and system performance.

Vision for the Future and Development

SIERA NanoAqua advances the planning and implementation of hybrid wastewater treatment plants designed to minimize operating costs and create value from recovered resources.

In this concept, existing facilities are partially upgraded to reduce electricity consumption to less than 45%. Sludge is gasified, and biogas is converted into electricity, allowing the plant’s own energy demand to be largely covered.

At the same time, the system enables the year-round recovery of irrigation water and natural fertilizer. Thermal and electrical energy can also be used in wider utilization concepts, such as greenhouse operations or grid feed-in. In this way, wastewater treatment plants evolve from cost centers into integrated systems for water, energy, and resource recovery.
